Free cars Kenya: why a free car is rarely ready to drive

A car given away for free is, in most cases, not running or has a serious mechanical issue — otherwise the owner would have sold it for at least something. That doesn't mean it's not worth taking: a damaged or non-running car can be a genuinely useful parts source, or a solid base for a restoration project if you have the skills and the patience for it.

Paperwork is the first thing to check — without a proper title and a documented transfer of ownership, registering the car in your name afterward may not be possible at all.

Unpaid fines, import duties, or tax debts from the previous owner sometimes follow the vehicle under the rules in Kenya, so it's worth confirming this before agreeing to take it.

Check the underside of the body for hidden rust rather than just the visible panels — that's where corrosion develops quietly for years before it shows up as an actual hole in the panel.

0 ads in this category, and treating a free car like a genuine restoration project, not a shortcut, leads to fewer regrets later.
