Free furniture Kenya: check the frame, not just the fabric

Furniture people give away for free in Kenya is usually still perfectly usable — a sofa or dresser gets replaced during a renovation or a move, not because it's actually broken. Before agreeing to pick anything up, check the joints and hardware: a wobbly hinge or a broken drawer slide is a cheap fix, far cheaper than buying new furniture outright, but it's worth knowing about upfront.

Upholstered pieces (sofas, armchairs) are worth checking for odor and water stains — a smell of damp or stale smoke is much harder to remove than it looks from photos alone.

Flat-pack and modular furniture (wardrobes, shelving units) is easier to move in pieces, so ask whether the assembly instructions or at least all the original hardware survived.

Because free furniture pickup usually means moving something bulky yourself, it's worth lining up transport before you commit — not every couch fits in a regular car.
