Cosmetics and skincare products most often get given away when a product simply didn't work for someone's skin type, not because anything is wrong with the product itself. Before using anything secondhand, check the period-after-opening symbol on the packaging — a small open-jar icon with a number of months tells you the real shelf life once a product has been used.
Medical devices (blood pressure monitors, nebulizers, massagers) are often given away after recovery or from a family member's estate, and it's worth checking that they still power on, run on standard voltage in the US, and, where possible, giving them a proper clean before use.
Unopened perfume and makeup hold their quality far longer than opened products, so those are the safest bets in this category.
Hair tools (straighteners, dryers) and small grooming devices are worth testing on the spot before you agree to take them home.
