Hamsters, rabbits, and guinea pigs: what to check before you take one home

Small pets get rehomed constantly by Victoria families, usually because a child's interest fades after a few months while the cage stays behind as the parents' responsibility. Rabbits and guinea pigs live considerably longer than a hamster, so committing to one is a multi-year decision, not a short-term novelty.

Ask whether the cage, water bottle, and bedding come with the animal — that alone can save a meaningful amount on setup costs for a new owner.

Hamsters are nocturnal, which surprises a lot of first-time owners once the wheel starts spinning at 2 a.m. right next to the bed.

Guinea pigs are social animals and do noticeably worse living alone, so if you can take a bonded pair instead of a single one, that's usually the kinder option.
